Two original newspapers the News letter on the unionist side and Irish News on the republican side in Northern Ireland are joined by three other news papers-Daily Ireland, the Belfast Telegraph and the Daily view. The News Letter's editor, Hunter believes that there will only be three surviving Northern Ireland titles in the medium to long term namely the Belfast Telegraph, the Irish News and the News Letter.

Conrad Black, former CEO and chairman of Hollinger International Inc. had established Canada's National Post in 1998. Five years after launching Post, the media empire of Conrad Black began to crumble under the weight of allegations that he and his close circle of associates had treated his publicly traded Hollinger International as 'personal piggy banks'.
