Back to the drawing boards

Article Abstract:

Manufacturers of drawing tablets are competing for a share of the market, and in the process performance is improving, new features continue to be added and costs are diminishing. Presently almost all painting, drawing and image-editing software work best with a pressure-sensitive stylus-tablet combination. Manufacturers seeking to differentiate themselves are targeting business users and adding new features. Features such as tilt for line thicknesses and eraser devices are bringing Wacom, CalComp and Fractal Design Painter products in close competition. However, users should choose styluses which they feel comfortable handling, and trying them at trade shows is recommended. Other features users should be aware of are tracing aids, macro buttons and tablet size. Drawing tablets can now function on Macintosh, Windows, Unix and even Amiga platforms. Drawing tablets prices range from $175 to $400, and often come with bundled software.

Powertone 1.1

Article Abstract:

Intense Software Inc's $249 Powertone 1.1 color processing software starts with a color image, mapping combinations of two colors chosen to the full color spectrum of the image. This is unique from Adobe PhotoShop and other programs that start with a grayscale image. The program created beautiful two-color images. Personal color adjustments are awkward, but the automated coloring is sufficient. Another feature missing from the software is batch processing. The software runs on both Macintosh and Windows platforms. The results are excellent, and this program is highly recommended for those that even do a small amount of two-color processing.

Headline Studio 1.0

Article Abstract:

MetaCreations' $249 ($169 to download) Headline Studio 1.0 animation software is an outstanding product that receives four stars of a possible five. Headline Studio makes it easy to add motion and effects to type or objects. Although the product targets people who make Web banners, anyone who creates animations for the Web can create them faster and more effectively with Headline Studio. The program's interface is smart, modern-looking and attractive, but performance of a tested version was slow, probably because a PC equipped with a 210MHz processor was used. Headline Studio is meant to run on processors of 266MHz and above.
