Rome's Vicary started an architectural design competition to design a church that provides congregations with a place of worship and a social center for the community. The churches were to be designed for a piece of land in the Casilino quarter of Rome, about half a mile from the official end of the city. Architect Richard Meier's design was chosen because it effectively blended the spiritual and social aspects of the project.

The discussions of both the IDSA worldesign 96 conference in Orlando, FL, and Gillo Dorfles' book Design Percorsi e trascorsi echo each other in places and reinforce the importance of defining international industrial design. Good design can reduce production costs, add value to objects, and display modern humanity. The theme of the conference was 'Seven continents, six billion people, four oceans, one worldesign.'

Photographer Richard Misrach is known for his large-plate photographs of the American desert in his opus 'Desert Cantos.' He defends himself against the criticism that he is bleak with the contention that difficult ideas are contained within beauty. Aside from pure landscapes, Misrach photographs disturbing fixtures such as energy plants, military bases, and nuclear test sites within the landscape.
