Adobe Acrobat 4.0 portable document format (PDF) reader introduces flexibility long awaited by the printing industry. With Acrobat 4.0, users can convert any file into PDF format. Furthermore, the partially open source code has enabled third parties to develop plug-in software that enhances Acrobat's abilities, in some cases to the point of circumventing Acrobat altogether. NetFormation FaceIt! allows designers to change images within a PDF document. Graeme Dykes Prepress Software's Background Adder allows publishers to add a background image to PDFs. DocuLex Pdf quickly converts even the largest files into PDF including on-the-fly spell checking in thirteen languages with searchable text. Other tools allow the user to extract PDF data without changing the original document.

There are several panes in the main window for previewing layouts and Web-browser views, as well as an Asset Center with a drag-and-drop list of Web-page elements such as images, videos, animations, styles, interactions, content tables and links.
