A cover story

Article Abstract:

The general process of producing a Publish magazine cover is described and exemplified by the current cover. The process begins with a meeting of editors, staff designers and writers to develop concepts for the cover. Sketches are worked up, and a QMS ColorScript 100 is used to produce a set of comps for feedback, after which the editor-in-chief and the art director settle on one concept. Artwork to be used is scanned at a service bureau and combined with graphic elements produced on Macintosh Quadra computers. Resulting designs are converted to EPS and DCS files, the latter placed in a QuarkXPress file for editors to work on cover text. A second set of comps is made when the text is complete, semifinal proofs are produced on a SuperMac Technology SuperMatch ProofPositive dye sublimation printer for final review as well as on an Iris from the QuarkXPress file, and Agfaproofs are produced when the entire magazine is printed on film.

Derring-do, down under

Article Abstract:

In 1985, Australian Consolidated Press's Brian Anderson updated their mostly manual editorial and production processes, keeping in mind that the aim was to make money, not prove that everything could be done electronically. He decided early on only to use technology for tasks for which clear savings could be seen. To build the system, 350 networked PCs were bought, both 286- and 386-based, and off-the-shelve software, Xerox's Ventura Publisher for layout and Xyquest's Xywrite Plus for test processing. ACP now has the freedom to use new versions of the products, or new applications. An ACP subsidiary, Contex Systems, is set up to service, support and sell networked PC-based publishing systems. ACP's PC network publishing system is one of the world's largest.

Advertising's new wave

Article Abstract:

The use of digital advertising by publishers is growing gradually, but it still lags far behind editorial content in terms of implementation. Most magazine editorial content is processed digital, however advertising matter is still often done mechanically, based on film. The Digital Distribution of Advertising for Publications Association has put forth great effort to increase the numbers of magazine ads that are being distributed digitally. A workflow that is more complicated than the editorial side is one of the obstacles to all-digital advertising. Many more people and steps are involved, although the same technologies would be used for both sides.
