Article Abstract:
Jet Set 1.0 ($79.95), distributed by Intex Solutions, is a new Lotus 1-2-3 add-on software package. Jet Set helps you create attractive print copy, using Hewlett-Packard Laserjets. The package offers various improvements on 1-2-3: spreadsheet margin widths can be precisely adjusted; fonts can be more easily mixed on a page; multiple copies can be printed; and settings for print parameters can be named and saved. The package has some faults: for example, the program does not support 1-2-3 border commands that permit column headings and row labels to repeat on different pages; and combining boldface type and underlining in cells causes the cells to misalign when they print. The program requires 45Kbytes (plus at least 256Kbytes for 1-2-3 version 2.0 or later), and DOS 2.0 or later. Overall, the frustrations of this program outweigh its benefits.

The use of the DDL document description language from Imagen Corp. in new Hewlett-Packard (HP) Laserjet laser printers will give those printers page-processing and typesetting capabilities comparable to Apple Laserwriters, which use the Postscript language. In fact, DDL offers superior speed because of bit-mapped fonts and a memory facility for storing complex graphics procedures. Major companies will support DDL including the following: Aldus, Microsoft, Studio Software, Software Publishing, Graham Software, and T-Maker. Moreover, Imagen has licensed fonts from major typeface vendors: Mergenthaler, Bigelow and Holmes, and the International Typeface Corp. HP will provide an upgrade for current Laserjet owners, probably in the form of an expansion board.

Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard's Laserjet Series II printer ($2,495) will replace the Laserjet and Laserjet Plus printers. The Laserjet 2000 ($19,995 - $24,995) has networking capabilities and prints 20 pages per minute. Scanjet ($1,495) a flatbed scanner offers resolutions from 38 to 300 dpi and saves scanned images for transfer to page makeup programs. The Series II uses a Canon engine that reduces price and size. It prints eight pages per minute at 300 dots per inch and has three more resident fonts with an additional slot for font cartridges.
