"The terrorism of suffering" - the clinical diary of Sandor Ferenczi revisited

Article Abstract:

Sandor Ferenczi contributed to the understanding of transference and countertransference through his emphasis on the interpersonal aspects of psychoanalysis. Ferenczi's work and his standing within the psychoanalytic community were the subject of a presentation by Giselle Galdi at a meeting of the Assn for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis on April 11, 1996. The 'terrorism of suffering' emerged as an important metaphor in Ferenczi's work. The discussant, Arnold Rachman, described how Ferenczi is now being integrated into the psychoanalytic mainstream.

"Yours, thirsty for honesty, Ferenczi": some background to Sandor Ferenczi's pursuit of mutuality

Article Abstract:

Lewis Aron uses letters between Sandor Ferenczi and Sigmund Freud to reexamine the relationship and subsequent conflict between the two men. The letters show that Ferenczi's attempt to develop a more intimate association was rejected by Freud as the projection of womanlike and gay longings not to be valued. Ferenczi's focus on reciprocity was a precursor to modern psychoanalytic techniques.

"Yours, thirsty for honesty, Ferenczi": some background to Sandor Ferenczi's pursuit of mutuality

Article Abstract:

Letters between Sandor Ferenczi and Sigmund Freud demonstrate that Ferenczi wanted a relationship of openness and mutuality and Freud resisted. The two psychoanalysts developed approaches toward patients similar to approaches they took toward each other. Freud was distant, reserved, and authoritative, while Ferenczi was warm, emotional, and egalitarian.
