Levels of phonological awareness in three cultures

Article Abstract:

In the current study, examined the effects of native language and reading instruction on phonological awareness among beginning readers in three cultures: Hong Kong, Xian (China), and Toronto. These results underscore the roles of both language and writing system in understanding levels of phonological awareness.

Notation to symbol: development in children's understanding of print

Article Abstract:

Children's development from representational to symbolic thought for print is explored using the moving word task. A basic misunderstanding about how meaning is signified by print leading to children making errors in the task is observed.
