Heterosexism and homophobia in Scottish school sex education: exploring the nature of the problem

Article Abstract:

Research into examples of heterosexism and homophobia, along with instances of good practice in sex education, seen in 25 Scottish schools is presented. It is concluded that there are significant limits to teachers' views of what discussing homosexuality can and should entail.

The quest for modern manhood: masculine stereotypes, peer culture, and the social significance of homophobia

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the use of homophobic terms by boys and young men and the meanings they present which using them are discussed. It is suggested that the early use of these terms is very meaningful and carefully targeted.

Naming the "outsider within": homophobic pejoratives and the verbal abuse of lesbian, gay and bisexual high-school pupils

Research into the use of homophobic pejoratives among young high school students is presented. It is concluded that young people seem to attach very little significance to this type of derogation.
