Effects of induced rumination and distraction on mood and overgeneral autobiographical memory in adolescent major depressive disorder and controls

Article Abstract:

The role of affective-cognitive processes of rumination and overgeneral autobiographical memory retrieval in the first episodes of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in adolescents is investigated by examining whether induced rumination as compared to disrtraction differentially increase depression, have a negative effect on current mood, which is specific to MDD, impact on overgeneral memory retrieval, have an effect on overgeneral memory specific to MDD. The result suggests that in adolescent MDD the rumination increases depressed mood as well as tendency to retrieve negative categoric overgeneral memories.
