An examination of the construct validity of coping dispositions for a sample of recently divorced mothers

Article Abstract:

Recently divorced mothers exhibit active coping, cognitive restructuring, social support seeking and avoidance, indicating the construct validity of coping dispositions. Active coping is associated with reduced distress, which is inconsistent over time. Psychological distress and stressful events cause enhanced avoidance. Avoidant behavior is a result of failure of adaptation. Support seeking and psychological distress are independent of each other.
