An application of expectancy theory to eating disorders; development and validation of measures of eating and dieting expectancies

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to develop and validate instruments for measuring learned expectations for reinforcement from eating and from dieting and thinness. The expectancy that dieting and thinness lead to overgeneralized self-improvement characterized bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa patients and correlated with dieting behavior in a general sample. Results indicate that positive reinforcement expectancies were unrelated to disinhibited eating, but anorexic patients expected significantly less positive reinforcement from eating than did bulimic patients or controls.

Toward a comprehensive assessment of fundamental motivation: factor structure of the Reiss profiles

Article Abstract:

Two novel psychological instruments to be used in the assessment of fundamental motivation are presented. The first is a self-report tool designed for use with anybody who can read and understand the items. The other is a ratings instrument to evaluate fundamental motivation in people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. Six factor analyses and a study evaluating test-retest reliabilities with a seventh independent sample were performed. Results of factor analyses of the Reiss Profiles were consistent across diverse assessment and samples methods.
