Affect, cognition, and the emergence of self-knowledge in the toddler offspring of depressed mothers

Article Abstract:

Researchers investigated visual self-recognition in young children of depressed mothers. The findings confirmed earlier research in that the children, who were aged 18-21 months, displayed no difference in visual self-recognition whether or not their mothers were depressed, indicating that self-recognition is a function of biological development. However, children of depressed mothers were more likely to have a non-positive reaction to their image in the post-rouge condition, and to change from positive to non-positive reactions in this application.

Affective, organizational, and relational characteristics of maltreating families: A systems perspective

Article Abstract:

Maltreating families interacting at the systems level were observed to determine if maltreating and nonmaltreating families could be distinguished. Sexually abusive families exhibited more problems regulating anger, and depended less on adaptive-flexible relationship strategies.
