Acculturation-related variables, sexual initiation, and subsequent sexual behavior among Puerto Rican, Mexican, and Cuban youth

Article Abstract:

A subsample from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health database was analyzed using a prospective design in order to determine the relationship between the acculturation-related variables, past sexual activity and subsequent sexual behavior in a sample of Latino youth in the United States. The results indicate that the amount of exposure to U.S. culture is not significantly associated with the transitions to sexual activity in immigrant Latino adolescents.

Latent growth curve analyses of peer and parent influences on smoking progression among early adolescents

Article Abstract:

A study of the social influences on smoking in latent growth curve analyses of data from 1,320 youths, who were assessed five times during 6th to 9th grade, is presented. The results confirm powerful association over time of social influences with smoking and give evidence that parenting behavior protects against smoking progression by limiting increases in number of friends who smoke.
