The interaction between phonology and orthography in early stages of reading acquisition is examined through a series of experiments. Topics include orthographic development and metaphonological development, including nonword reading, analogy production, phonological common unit identification, and longitudinal progression in performance.

While reading, eyes momentarily remain fixated on a word until the meaning is processed. The next few words are also being subconsciously processed during this time. This study measures the relationship between the length of the pause on the target word and the speed of processing the subsequent text.

Parafoveal processing occurs in reading when words outside the main focus of the eye are processed simultaneously with the targeted text. This study measured reading times of targeted text influenced by the length, initial letters, and frequency of words presented in parafoveal vision.
