Yeltsin suggests joint missile defense

Article Abstract:

Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin proposed a global missile defense system that would be developed and operated by both Russia and the US. Such a system could be based on modified Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) technology. Yeltsin's Jan 31, 1992 offer contradicted his previous statements reaffirming Russia's compliance with the Antiballistic Missile Treaty which prohibits extensive missile defenses. However, US officials have doubts about Russia's antiballistic missile capabilities and are not inclined to share SDI technology.

Bush-Yeltsin summit brings deep new strategic arms cuts

Article Abstract:

The summit between Pres Bush and Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin has produced additional reductions in the strategic nuclear arsenals of the US and Russia. The new reductions expand on the provisions of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and stipulate reductions in deployed warheads. Negotiators stated that a formal bilateral treaty would soon be forged to formalize the agreement. Observers said that the dramatic new reductions were made possible by the mutual trust and increasingly good relations between the US and Russia.
