Uncertainty on the Aegean fault line

Article Abstract:

The Greek Parliament is divided between nationalists, advocates of alliance with the European Union, and those who favor alliance with NATO. The last have their view because of seeing the US as the world's real power-broker. While Greece's strategic importance to the West diminished with the fall of communism, the Greek private sector is looking at investing in former Yugoslavia now that the Dayton agreements may have made the area more peaceful. It is difficult to predict the direction Greece will take under Kostas Simitis, the prime minister who followed Andreas Papandreou.

The Presidential election and American foreign policy

Article Abstract:

This year's Presidential election is influenced more by personalities than by political parties, as is typical of American Presidential elections. Foreign policy issues in particular have receded from the debate as both major candidates have failed to articulate any plan or vision. Foreign aid languishes as politicians carefully avoid the imputation of unconcern for domestic problems. With the demise of the Soviet threat, abortion rights and economic recovery have become the defining issues for this election.
