U.S. hands over Somali mission to new UN peacekeeping force

Article Abstract:

The UN Security Council Resolution 814 on Mar 26, 1993 directed the formation of the UN operation in Somalia (UNOSOM II) under a mandate based on the UN Charter's Chapter VII and its takeover from the 38,000 strong US led Unified Task Force (UNITAF) on May 4, 1993. UNOSOM II's mandate was originally scheduled to end on Oct 31, 1993, but is now expected to last two years and cost approximately $1.5 billion in the first year. UNOSOM II has ambitions plans of economically aiding and resettling around 1.8 million refugees, but it faces certain problems such as the continued civil war in Somalia.

UN mission reaches milestone with record Cambodian vote

Article Abstract:

Cambodians came to the country's first multiparty elections since 1951 in record numbers, braving violence and threats. The elections were part of the United Nations' peacekeeping operation in Cambodia, and Prince Norodom Sihanouk was returned to power. He was awarded full and special powers during the assembly's first session. The Cambodian government and the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) will now have to demobilize former fighters and create a new national army and police force.

CWC opponents succeed in delaying Senate vote

Article Abstract:

Anti-Chemical Weapons Convention legislators have delayed the voting of the treaty until 1997. Opponents of the treaty, who include Sens. Jesse Helms and Jon Kyl, stress that the agreement does not cover states outside the convention and is not capable of monitoring all violations. The accord, which was approved by Pres. George Bush in 1993, will again be reviewed when the 105th Congress convenes in Jan. 1997.
