Anti-dumping charges, trade imbalance, the unsettled issue of most-favored-nation status, and the one-China policy are the major issues hindering the growth of US-China trade. The Sino-US Trade Agreement, signed in 1979, has led a vast multi-billion dollar trade relationship and the US's position as China's third largest investor. The one-China policy became a sore point between the US and China following Taiwanese leader Lee Tenghui's US visit in 1995.

Research estimating the value-added contributions of the exports to the United States of Hong Kong and China is presented. Particular attention is given to the value of the contributions and to the importance of the value-added exports to the three countries.
