The price of success

Article Abstract:

This article discusses Britain's role as the second largest supplier of weapons on the international arms market, questioning the assumption that the export of arms sustains employment and reduces the costs of supplying the British army. As of January 2001, the British government has drafted legislation to control arms exportation; although the right to sell arms is addressed by Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which recognises the rights of countries to defend themselves, the weapons purchases are often used for aggression and repression, which violates human rights as designated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the spread of HIV and AIDs through peacekeeping soldiers. Issues inlcude the UN's efforts to manage the situation by possibly imposing mandatory testing of the peacekeepers, raising questions of rights and cooperation among the various contributing nations.
