The legacy of Luigi Einaudi and Wilhelm Roepke

Article Abstract:

The philosophies of Luigi Einaudi (1874-1961) and Wilhelm Roepke (1899-1966) are characterized as 'conservative political economy.' This is to distinguish their thought from both liberal economics and conservatism. Conservative political economy is espoused by contemporary thinkers such as Michael Novak, George Gilder and Irving Kristol, none of whom are economists in a technical sense. In contrast, Einaudi and Roepke combined technical proficiency in economics with conservative political economy to come up with sensible economic policies.

The romanticism of Wilhelm Roepke

Article Abstract:

The economist Wilhelm Roepke sought a socially responsible economy for Germany, avoiding and correcting past abuses, and his ideas were articulated in his early books. Roepke's writings also deal with issues that are still afflicting the West. In his technical economic work he affirms the importance of maintaining private property, economic competition and the free operation of prices. In Crises and Cycles, published in 1936, he deals with the issue of business cycles, such as the boom-and-bust tendency in industrialized economies.

Economics and the eirenic mind

Article Abstract:

Economics has lost the ability to distinguish between the good and the evil and between the permanent things and the indifferent things. This has led to the separation of economics from morality. To narrow the separation of the two entities, the love of peace should permeate the very essence of modern economics. This irenic disposition will enable modern economics to be charitable and to be more sensitive to the needs of the common man.
