The history of the word "Democracy" in France

Article Abstract:

The word 'Democracy' gained currency in France in 1848, when it's widespread use began in the political discourse as a type of government in which people are sovereign. The term was used in the 18th century solely with reference to the ancient world. Montesquieu and Rousseau, despite their divergent views on ancient democracy, agreed on the twin principles of self-government and direct legislation by the government as the foundation of a democratic system. Rousseau considers the sovereignty of people superior to democracy. Montesquieu stressed the instability of democracy.

Issues concerning the political regime of Bolivia are discussed. A short history of the Bolivian democratic system since 1985 is presented. It is emphasized that Bolivia operates on two contradictory political levels, namely legal formalism and political participation.
