The challenge of secularization

Article Abstract:

Muslim societies are reacting differently to challenges posed by the spread of secularism. Pluralism in a nascent form has always been a part of Islam, but external secular influences have spurred a debate on what direction the Islamic revolution should take. Two contradictory schools of thought are evident, based on their attitude towards religion. The reformers advocate internal reforms and a return to the Islamic constitution. The proactives address social and religious issues of diverse Muslim communities as being the only path towards lasting democratization.

Article Abstract:

It is argued that the nineteenth-century encounter of Muslims with the modernizing West is the most relevant in shaping the features and attitudes of Muslim societies. These encounters involved Muslim confrontations with European colonial powers and gave rise to lasting misunderstandings. This resulted in Muslims rejecting certain aspects of modernity, as an alienation and a surrender.

This article discusses current trends in Muslim thought. The author argues there is an emerging form of?enlightened, liberal?thought in Islam, but it is often misunderstood and wrongly labeled.
