Tajikistan's elusive peace

Article Abstract:

Tajikistan's govt has been unable to establish law and order thanks to an inherited set of problems, military opposition, and Afghanistan's continuing conflict. However, UN-sponsored peace initiatives have helped, and they remain promising so long as expectations and planning are realistic. Only continued international presence and activity assures the opposition that more reforms are on the way, staving off further conflict and instability. The country's history and overall problems are summarized.

Cyprus: a peacekeeping paradigm

Article Abstract:

The UN's inability to foster peace in the Cypriot conflict bodes ill for its influence in other conflicts such as the former Yugoslavia. Cyprus shows that peacekeeping troops can do little more than maintain the status quo and alleviate some of the human suffering. Finding a settlement is up to the locals once matters have cooled off. Cyprus shows that in ethnic conflicts this cooling off can take a very long time.

The ghost at the table

Article Abstract:

Israel's opposition to the Middle East peace process has a real effect on problems in the Gulf. The Arab nations in the Gulf have withdrawn their support for UN policy towards Iraq because of a perceived double standard regarding Israel. UN policy to contain both Iraq and Iran is not flexible enough to respond to political change, such as the election of a moderate in Iran.
