Sanctions at the ready

Article Abstract:

The offer by the US and the European Union (EU) to negotiate with Iran carries with it incentives for acceptance and potential penalties for rejection and these sanctions has a political and economic price for the US. The Islamic Republic would have to consider the targeted sanctions that are apparently part of the package widely agreed internationally along with secondary sanctions that have already encouraged companies trading with both Iran and America to withdraw.

Holding up democracy

Article Abstract:

Issues are discussed regarding Operation Uphold Democracy, which reinstated democracy in Haiti, and four peackeeping missions since 1990 in whichh the UN worked with the OAS to create a new police force in the country and to promote human rights. Democratic elections have been frequently delayed, casting the effectiveness of all these missions into question.

Resent, resist, compete

Article Abstract:

America's benign dominance is no longer benign as nations are resenting rather than respecting US power and are resisting rather than following its leadership. Competition with European Union reveals that the euro is steadily becoming powerful than the dollar.
