This article discusses the media coverage surrounding the sinking of the Russian submarine the Kursk, comparing coverage in Russia to that in the West, showing how public opinion is effected by media reports and how politicians, particularly President Vladimir Putin, have responded to criticism. The authors claim that Western coverage and criticism of the military's handling, insinuating that it could not happen to them, is based on false assumptions and does not take into account the changes in attitude and practice that Russian officials have adopted in response to public criticism.
