Putting the nuclear genie back in the bottle

Article Abstract:

The possibility of a nuclear war was significantly reduced through the Intermediate Nuclear Forces agreement of 1987 and the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty of 1993. A nuclear holocaust, however, remains a threat as long as nations know how to develop these weapons. A more comprehensive worldwide effort is needed to ensure nuclear nonproliferation. A global ban on nuclear weapons testing should also be implemented.

The Mar. 1995 subway attack in Japan of the Aum Shinrikyo, a cult that preached Armageddon between US and Japan, exposed the cult's activities to the world. It also underscored the need for a constant global vigilance against such groups and the preservation of arms control agreements.

In many countries the last 50 years have been extremely successful, but elsewhere stagnation or decline is evident. The biggest challenge of the 21st century could still be the threat of nuclear weapons.
