Over the horizon?

Article Abstract:

This article examines Turkey's membership negotiations with the European Union. The author maintains that the European Union will not begin negotiations with Turkey until at least 2004 and gave Turkey an outline of their criteria which must be fulfilled by that time, and states that with the added problems of Turkey's economic crisis they may never join the European Union.

Article Abstract:

Turkey's relations with the United States and Europe are examined. Relations with the United States has been hurt by Turkey's reluctant help in the Iraq War and European relations have been hurt by Turkey's stance on Cyprus. Turkey's problems with Kurdish nationalists have also hurt international relations.

Article Abstract:

Ankara is not able to fulfill the so-called Copenhagen political criteria, a part of the union treaty and is hence unable to become a member of the European Union. The European Union as a power of values cannot dilute its standards in accepting Turkey that is not up to its principles and norms.
