Is South-Eastern Europe making it?

Article Abstract:

The switch to a market economy is advancing at varying speeds in the former communist countries of Southeastern Europe. Bulgaria, Slovenia and Romania are the only countries achieving some success in this transition. Slovenia's faster transition may be because the country started the transition with fewer structural problems and with greater education and skills among the populace. Countries with difficult domestic and foreign policy situations have in general experienced more problems in transforming their economies.

The edge of the abyss

Article Abstract:

Political events faced by Nigerians from May to Sep 1998 have been extraordinary. These include the deaths of General Sani Abacha, the head of state, and Chief Moshood Abiola, the imprisoned opposition leader.
