Iran hosts IAEA mission; Syria signs safeguards pact

Article Abstract:

Iran and Syria, countries which are believed to be pursuing nuclear capability, started their move to dispel international anxiety by undertaking conciliatory moves. Iran invited an International Atomic Energy Agency mission to visit its facilities while Syria finally signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty which it had so long chosen to ignore. The US, however, still distrusts Iran as there is the lingering suspicion that the latter is out to acquire nuclear capability sooner or later regardless of present policies.

Russia seeks U.S. cooperation for expanding arms sales

Article Abstract:

Pres Boris Yeltsin has been criticized by Russians for the decline of the Russian arms market, with countries like Israel and Saudi Arabia refusing to buy arms from Russia. Apart from Iran and the UAE, purchasers do not consider Russian weapons competitive. In a meeting with US Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, the Russian foreign minister, Anderi Jiztrev, requested America to allow Russia to sell arms to America's arms buyers.
