Hans Morgenthau and Eric Voegelin on the ethics of modernity

Article Abstract:

The philosopher Eric Voegelin and the theorist Hans J. Morgenthau doe not feature prominently in the growing literature on political ethics, although they both devoted attention to the shaping of modern ethical perspectives by ideological currents of scientism and positivism in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They define scientific objectivity in the context of episteme politike, and they looked to the historical basis of rationalism that ended in the identification of science and ethics. They expose the corruption in modern ethical doctrines, descending from reason, as the essence of humanitas.

Eric Voegelin on the authority to lead

Article Abstract:

Eric Voegelin felt that a leader's authority has to be a balance between force, reason and revelation, or might, measure and meaning. Might or acts of force are necessary to maintain order, and prevent damage being caused to society. Measure and reason lead to the development of a sense of proportion, which helps a leader to realize goals and encourages people to follow. A leader's respect for revelations about the meaning and purpose of life are important to the organizational structure of a society. Successful leadership is a balance between these three authorities when communicating to others.
