Free politics and free markets in Latin America

Article Abstract:

There has been a significant shift towards democracy in Latin America in the 1990s. Each country has developed in unique ways, but the sweep of democracy across Latin America can be seen as part of a common international process. In many Latin American countries, democratic institutions and procedures have been responsible for devising the long-term rules on which the open market economy will be based. Democratic politics and economic reforms will only be truly consolidated if democratic procedures are used to establish stable majorities to back up freer markets and freer politics.
