Forging chains across Eurasia

Article Abstract:

The dissolution of the Soviet Union has led to the formation of two coalitions centered in the Transcaucasus, Central and Southern Asia. One alliance, dominated by the US, includes the West, as well as Azerbaijan, Israel, Pakistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. The other, dominated by Russia, includes Armenia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Turkistan. The alliances reflect political trends in the area, such as an increased connection with other regions, especially South Asia and the Middle East. Geopolitics in the region would alter significantly if China decided to increase its role there.

Bear hug for the Baltic

Article Abstract:

The Baltic region is being led by Lithuania towards NATO because of the disputed borders and minority problems of Russia, Estonia, and Latvia. Russia voiced concern about the US-Baltic Charter and Boris Yeltsin has not shown any signs of improving relations with Baltic states. In Feb 1996, the Russian Foreign Minister suggested conservative guidelines to break the deadlock.

Turbulence threatens

Article Abstract:

Issues discussed concern the potential for conflict among Asian nations, and the relationship between the US and Japan with regard to policies towards Taiwan and China. Topics addressed include US response to Chinese military exercises in 1996 intended to intimidate Taiwan, and US-Japan security cooperation.
