Article Abstract:
Democracy has come to some forty countries in postcommunist times, but these newly democratized states were not guided by secular ideals. Asian authoritarianism and the Islamist political system are the two alternatives to democracy in the postcommunist world. The democratization process comes with the problems of war and social decay. But third wave democracies face the additional danger of the erosion of democratic values. While democratic transitions will continue, focus must shift to the consolidation of newly established nascent democracies.
