Article Abstract:

The increasing protectionist sentiments in the West against East Asia can be attributed to the West's failure to compensate for living beyond its means. The success of the East Asia is due to the willingness of its people to accept lower standards of living when higher one is not possible.

The economic outlook for East Asia and China is mixed. Fear of failure has stimulated the so-called economic reforms among the Communists. If the economy does recover, the totalitarian regimes could make a comeback.

Article Abstract:

Japan should not be the unquestioned leader of trade in East Asia. The presence of China should not be overlooked. Many in the West are uncomfortable about Japan's continued growth and development.
