Alienation, estrangement and the politics of "free individuality" in two feminist science fictions: A Marxist feminist analysis

Article Abstract:

The concepts of alienation and estrangement are explained in the literary-critical and theoretical approaches to science fiction by describing how these concepts work in their feminist, science-fictional and Marxist connotations in the novels by Rebecca Ore in Outlaw School and Nicola Griffith's Slow River. The adaptation of these terms in Marxist readings of science fiction and a feminist reappraisal of some of Marx's description is presented.

Some of the issue that women's movements and feminist scholarship have had to grapple with over the last three decades is discussed. Some of the many underlying factors that have impinged on feminist activism are reported.
