Algeria's tragic contradictions

Article Abstract:

The roots of the Algerian crisis can be located in the contradictions of the regime structure and the politics evolving from it. The post liberation period saw a contradiction in the establishment of a double structure of state power, the army's legitimation power on the one hand and the executive power that propped the army, on the other. Democratization since 1989 led to contradictions such as executive powers' resort to corruption to gain loyalists in order to hide its nonexisting legitimacy and the attempt by the leaders to converge both legitimacies through electoral politics.
