Present day animal protection regulations that subscribe to a mainstream liberal point of view, apply different standards to humans and animals, and also safeguard some animals more than others. It is advocated that to achieve better protection of animals, it would be advisable to first address the discrimination amongst different types of animals before attempting to challenge inconsistencies between humans and animals.

Article Abstract:
The circumstances surrounding the so-called 'moratorium' on the authorization of new genetically modified (GM) products imposed by the European Union (EU) during 1998-2004 are examined by analyzing its status and time-frame through the perspectives of intergovernmentalism and supranationalism. It is seen that the moratorium has an ambiguous status as investigated through three alternate interpretations.
