Article Abstract:
The most important issue relating to the extension of democracy into civil society, with reference to John Ehrenberg's article of "Civil Society and Marxist Politics", is discussed. The issue of civil society instead of being abolished as an aspect of bourgeois class-rule, is emerging as an aspect of classless and state-less society.

Article Abstract:
Costa Rica counted as Latin America's most stable and vibrant democracies has begun to show troubling signs having of a political system where the citizens are unhappy with the tone and content of public life and the party system. The findings indicate that the link between citizens and the state is disintegrating.

Costa Rican society has evolved and become less deferential and political arrangements that worked well in the past no longer meet the country's needs. The failure of parties to modernize and to open up policy making helps to explain why Costa Rica hold their political class in such low regard.
