A classical approach to real exchange rate determination with an application for the case of Greece

Article Abstract:

The determinants of the long-term behavior of exchange rates have been studied by using Shaikh's hypothesis on the Greeck drachma. Shaik's hypothesis claims that the real exchange rate is the ratio of real unit labor cost of tradable goods between two countries. Results indicate that the exchange rate of the drachma is partially determined by the productivity of the export sector of Greece against that of the world. There is also evidence to prove that the purchasing power parity cannot explain the real exchange rate movements of the drachma for the past 35 years.

Secular gnosticism and classical realism

Article Abstract:

Secular gnosticism is the willful separation of consciousness from reason, while classical realism is an acknowledgment of the rational nature of man. Descartes was the earliest proponent of secular gnosticism, and he and his successors, through their sustained scholarly works, established the myth of the omnipresence of the mind. Classical realism was propounded by Plato and Aristotle, who believed that the Christian way of life was best achieved by adhering to the principles of classical realism.

The late Yitzhak Rabin of Israel was a realist in that he knew that the only alternative to peace is the resumption of Israeli rule over another nation. However, due to his belief in a peaceful Middle East, he offered equal citizenship and a separation of jurisdiction to the Arabs in Israel.
