A changed United States

Article Abstract:

The changing relationship between Latin America and the United States in recent years is the result not only of dramatic social, political and economic changes in Latin American but also of changes in the United States. The U.S. has become more of a service economy than a manufacturing economy, its current manufacturing is based more on technology, science, skilled labor and education, and the economy has become more open to international investment and trade.

The United States and Latin America at century's turn

Article Abstract:

Changes during the last 50 years in Latin America include the decline of population growth rates, improved health care, more industrial economies, mainly urban rather than rural societies, and a move towards democracy. With more focus on competitive free markets, it was inevitable that Latin America would develop closer ties with the United States.

The US should consider Latin America in its foreign policy. Latin America's relationship with the US is not limited to free trade but also involves its growing population within US borders.
