Endothelin: a knockout in London

Article Abstract:

New developments in endothelin research were the center of attention during the 4th International Conference on Endothelin from Apr. 23-26, 1995 in the UK. Topics that were presented included gene targeting of the endothelin 1 gene, expression cloning of endothelin converting enzyme (ECE), the development of ECE inhibitors and identification of ECE receptors and its antagonists. The classification and structural model of ECE and the effects of ECE antagonists in relation to diseases as shown in animal models are presented.

The Institute of Pharmacology of Sherbrooke: a first in Canada

Article Abstract:

The construction of the Institute of Pharmacology of Sherbrooke (IPS) is expected to be finished in mid-1997. The ISP, which is an expansion of the Dept. of Pharmacology at the University of Sherbrooke, will have three floors and a 100-seat lecture facility for research conferences. A team of medicinal chemists, under the direction of Dr. Pierre Deslonchamps, will develop new drugs at the IPS. Some 250 research and administrative staff will be housed at the IPS' laboratories and offices.

California dreamin' 'bout endothelin: emerging new therapeutics

Article Abstract:

Endothelin has been suspected of being responsible for many cardiovascular diseases. Endothelin-1 has been proven to cause malformation of blood vessels in developing mouse embryos, while endothelin-2 action on developing embryos is still unclear but has been shown to cause death at the infancy stage. Research direction is focused on antagonizing cell receptivity to endothelin and in identifying endothelin receptor subtypes.
