Article Abstract:
Flavonoids, vitexin and isovitexin in mung beans have shown antioxidant and topical anti-inflammatory characteristics. Flavones and flavonols are the most active compounds. Study results suggested that vitexin and isovitexin may be, at least partly, responsible for the in vitro antioxidant and in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of mung bean extracts. The antioxidant activity of isovitexin appear to be higher than that of vitexin. Isovitexin demonstrated anti-inflammatory characteristics against both croton-oil-induced and arachidonic-acid-induced ear edema, but vitexin demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity only against arachidonic-acid-induced edema.

Melanogenesis has been determined to be susceptible to the dynamic inhibitory activity of the ramulus mori extracts derived from the Morus alba L. tree that implies potential applications on uneven skin pigmentation. The experiment required the use of dried young twigs of the tree with extraction conducted with 70% ethanolic acqueous solution. Many cosmetics manufacturers have been formulating melanogenesis inhibitors since majority of women would like to prevent the occurence of uneven skin pigmentation. Cosmetics firms have also been discovering potential active agents utilized in cosmetic drugs to whiten skin.

Article Abstract:
There are few reports of the biological activity of mung beans, when have been used in medicine and cosmetics since ancient times. An ethanolic extract of the mung bean was obtained and its major constituents were isolated and their biological activity investigated. The flavonoids, vitexin and isovitexin were isolated and results indicated that they contribute to the in vitro antioxidant activity and in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of mung bean extracts.
