5-HT4 receptor agonists and bladder disorders

Article Abstract:

Ferguson and Christopher proposed self-catheterization as a treatment of urinary bladder disorders. Although acceptable, this method is unpleasant and may cause irritation of the urethra and internal sphincter. To remedy the problem, patients with bladder disfunction may be treated by activation of neuronal serotonin/5-HT4 receptors in detrusor muscle. Evidence show that these receptors potentiate cholinergic neuromuscular transmission in the destrusor to increase bladder voiding efficiency.

Rational design of peptide agonists of cell-surface receptors

Article Abstract:

A novel approach to the design of peptide agonists of cell-surface receptors is discussed. Topics include interaction of the major histocompatibility complex class I molecule Dk-(61-85) with the insulin receptor, modification of Dk-(61-85) for biological specificity, and development of an activator of the erythropoietin receptor.

Protective activity of adenosine receptor agonists in the treatment of organophosphate poisoning

Article Abstract:

Researchers are working on drugs that would inhibit the A1 adenosine receptor in order to prevent organophosphate poisoning. These drugs would also inhibit other excitatory receptors, which would prevent convulsions and damage to the nervous system.
