Artisan mid cap value gained 11% during 2005 due to the performance of stocks like Pioneer Natural Resources and Apache, which has put this fund at the top of the mid-cap category. This fund's three-year return is also extremely impressive in both absolute and relative terms and investors have certainly noticed that the fund's asset base ballooned from a mere $50 million in 2003 to $2.8 billion at the end of August 2005 when the fund closed to new investors.

The ten best performing funds and ten worst performing funds based on year-to-date return in March 2006 are listed. Greenspring fund headed the modern-allocation category with a 7.3% year-to-date return followed by Turner Small Cap Growth with a 17.1% return for the year-to-date and also Vanguard GNMA while Legg Mason Value and Oak Value did not perform well.

The Bogle small cap growth fund (BOGLX) topped the list of small growth funds category. The BOGLX topped the list with a return of 17.3 percent for the year 2005 as on November, causing envy to other managers with Columbus McKinnon and NutriSystem gaining 146 percent and 1,220 percent respectively for 2005.
