Demographic studies show that people are living longer, with 36 times more Americans over the age of 85 anticipated by the year 2000, as compared with 1900. In response, the 1995 White House Conference on Aging recommended greater economic, health-care, and social advances for the elderly.

There has seemed to be a negativity entering the political process that has caused a number of legislators to choose not to run for reelection and has caused many citizens to feel disconnected from the process. However, the government will not change until voters bring about the change.
