Holiday houses are good personal investments for quality of life issues, but do not expect them to out perform other investments. The downside of owning a vacation home should be considered. Popular resort spots often change from year to year and the supply of holiday homes does not exceed the public's demand. Maintenance costs, taxes and insurance must also be considered when looking at holiday property for investment purposes.

Demand for real estate along the eastern seaboard in Australia is growing due to falling interest rates and confidence in the property market. The market is so tight that many, including a majority of first-time home buyers, can only afford to purchase property that needs renovation. Many people, though, will fail to realize a profit for their efforts.

The better beach communities near major cities have shown the highest rise in residential housing prices. Whale Beach located on Sidney's north side is the top rated suburb with housing prices increasing 87% between 1996 and 1997.
