Most Australian companies in the latter part of 1998 witnessed growth and higher margins. Consequently, most investors and businesses are optimistic about 1999 and feel economic conditions will remain strong. However, investors should consider international downfalls and dangers. Investors should look ahead to the US economy, Japanese and Russian economic outlook, the Australian dollar, Brazilian conditions, the millennium bug, building developers, and others.

After the ups and downs at Southcorp it looks as though the conglomerate is poised for growth. Under the direction of Graham Kraehe since 1994, Southcorp has been restructured and pulled into a cohesive unit. The strategy has been to focus on its core businesses: packaging, appliances and the wine industry. Southcorp Wines is has been their highest performing division and Southcorp Appliances their lowest.
