Microsoft has the opportunity to reshape its image with the appointment of Steve Ballmer as new CEO. Ballmer replaces Bill Gates, who in the past several months has been in the middle of a federal antitrust lawsuit that has tarnished the software giant's image. Experts say a corporate image is inextricably linked to the CEO, but some experts say Gates and Ballmer are very much similar to result in any significant image makeover at Microsoft.

DoubleClick announced that it will tell Web users how they can avoid having their online behavior tracked by the company. Company president Kevin Ryan said that the company will use its 50 million banner ads to tell users how they can 'opt out.' DoubleClick, the biggest Internet ad- serving company, wants to link consumers' online behavior with data in Abacus, a huge database of consumers' offline catalog purchasing habits.

A study of fraud committed over the Internet revealed that online auctions account for 64% of all reported cases. The Internet Fraud Complaint Center, a joint undertaking of the National White Collar Crime Center and the US FBI, based the study from consumer complaints made from May 8, 2000, to Nov 8, 2000. Non-delivery of ordered goods account for 22% of the complaints while credit card fraud accounts for 5% of all reported crimes.
