The United States, U.N., European Union, Canada, and Haiti plan to spend $38.5 million to organize and conduct the voting for the municipal elections in Haiti for October 9, 2005. The U.N. and the donor countries are hoping the elections would provide a stable government that could receive grants make loans and help implement development projects.

The World Bank reveals that Haiti has lost about 97 percent of its trees due to floods and tropical storm in the year 2004. The few remaining trees are disappearing because peasants cut them down mostly for burning or selling charcoal.
